Monteverde means “Green Mountain” is Spanish and is taken from a small village on the lower edge of Tilaran Mountain Range. The town was founded not by Costa Ricans but by a group of North American Quakers, or friends.
Quakers
The history of these friends dates back to the 1940s, a time when young men were drafted to serve in the U.S. military forces or imprisoned for refusing to register for the draft. Quakers oppose all forms of violence, and they resisted being forced to serve in foreign wars. Many refused to register for the draft, and some were imprisoned as conscientious objectors. One group of friends living in Fairhope, Alabama, decided to escape this persecution by finding a new country in which to live. They chose Costa Rica.
After spending six months searching for a place to settle, they bought 1500 hectares (3750 acres) of land high in the cordillera de Tilaran and founded the community of Monteverde. Monteverde is located north of Puntarenas, has both national and international significance because of its conservation efforts and lifestyle centered around nature. Santa Elena is the hub for commercial services and tourism-based business.
The primary attraction is the Monteverde Biological Reserve, however, there are many other nature sites, picturesque trails, hanging bridges, as well as butterfly and frog exhibits. Monteverde is home to 130 species of mammals, 500 species of birds, 120 species of amphibians and reptiles, 3000 species of plants of which 500 are orchids. Monteverde area houses 2.5% of worldwide biodiversity, 10% of its flora is endemic.
