Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero is one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica. Imagine yourself sitting on a boat driving through an amazing system of canals, lagoons and rivers while you observe a lot of animals

Tortuguero National Park is located in the northeastern part of the country, on the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica, extending from the San Juan River, on the border with Nicaragua, to the Parismina River, and from the Tortuguero plains to the coast. The park was created in October 1975 and covers an area of 172,000 hectares, including a marine area of 52,000 hectares. The main reason for its creation was the protection of the green sea turtles, every year hundreds of turtles come to the beach to lay their eggs from july through September.

We offer tours to Tortuguero everyday from San Jose, Cahuita or Puerto Viejo de Limon, our packages include one day tours, 2 days and 1 night and 3 days and 2 nights. All packages include: transportation, lodging in standard room, bilingual guide, all meals, tours and taxes according to the program.

Itinerary for 3 Days / 2 Nights to Tortuguero

Day 1

Early in the morning we’ll pick you up and drive you through the Braulio Carrillo National Park. then, we’ll make a stop in the town of “Guápiles” to enjoy a delicious Costa Rican breakfast. Afterwards, we’ll continue the bus ride through bananas and pineapple plantations. Our driver will take you to Caño Blanco o La Pavona, where you will board a motor boat to Tortuguero, no vehicles in tortuguero, so boats are the only means of transportation. During the boat ride you get to see monkeys, freshwater turtles, iguanas, caimans and birds.

After you arrive in the area, you’ll be welcome by the staff of the hotel. The staff will indicate you where the rooms are so you can leave your luggage and go to the restaurant to enjoy a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll visit tortuguero village and our guide will introduce you to the local sights. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax in your hotel.

Day 2

Today you’ll explore Tortuguero national park by boat accompanied by a naturalist guide who will help you to find animals.


Itinerary as follow:
5:15 am wake up call
5:30 am we meet by the reception area for a cup of coffee
5:45 am departure to Tortuguero park ranger station (to check that you have your park ticket)
6:00 am to 8:00 am – Boat tour through the Tortuguero canals to seek for wildlife. Return to hotel for breakfast
9:30 am Guided natural history hike along the gardens of the hotel
11:00 – 12:00 time to relax and enjoy the pool
1:00 pm Lunch
2:30 pm – 4:30pm Departure for another boat trip through Tortuguero National park (only by boat, no walking)
4:30 to 7:00 pm time to relax by the bar
7:00 pm dinner

The way back to san Jose is the same as the way in.

It is necessary to reserve your visit to the Tortuguero National Park in advance. Tickets to the park must be purchased online and the information of each participant is required such as full name, passport number and nationality.

Climate

The climate in the area is hot and humid, with average monthly temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures of 18 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius have been reported. The area receives approximately 180 to 220 inches of rain per year. Relative humidity averages 88%.

Tortuguero

Its formation was due to the process of deposition of materials thrown by the volcanoes of the central volcanic mountain range. The volcanoes threw rocks, ash and other materials that gradually filled the Caribbean slope, and the rivers of the central mountain range deposited all the sediments and nutrients in the lower part of the coast forming what is known today as Tortuguero.

Admission is $18.08 for foreign adults and $5.65 for foreign children ages 2 to 11. Tickets can only be purchased online. We recommend to buy tickets in advance if you have any doubts contact us before you buy it.

The national park have strict regulations to protect sea turtles and its wildlife.
2- It’s forbidden to walk on the beach at night without a guide
3- During the sea turtle season its forbidden to use flashlights, no cameras, no cell phones or any sort of light
4- Light color cloth is not allowed (light color stress the turtles)
5- It is not recommend to swim in the sea, canals or lagoons due dangerous currents or crocodiles

Due to the ever changing nature of the rainforest, day-by-day activities are subject to change due to weather, trail or river conditions.
Children: 0 to 4 years old; free, sharing with two adults. Maximum 2 children per room
5 to 11 years; 50% on the net rate according to the adult occupation
Over 12 years, will pay the adult rate.
