History of Manuel Antonio
Manuel Antonio National Park is located on the Pacific coast and covers 1950 hectares of land and 55.000 hectares of marine area. Within the park you can find 9 hiking trails and 4 beaches (Manuel antonio, Playita, Espadilla sur and Escondido) Considered by “Forbes” as one of the most beautiful national parks.
The park was born from the communal pressure that was manifested against the prohibition of its former foreign owners for the enjoyment of the beaches by local people. Foreigners had a strong interest in developing the area as a tourist center. So thanks to pressure from the community, in 1972, the “National Park Beaches Recreation Manuel Antonio” (Parque Recreativo Nacional Playas de Manuel Antonio) was born.
